Project 1A: Precedent Studies

Analysing Spatial Poetics and Spatial Typologies in Architecture

This project requires us to identify and analyse spatial order and spatial poetics in precedent studies. One of the precedent studies must be PRE-MODERN while the other CONTEMPORARY. At the same time, one study must be CONCENTRIC with the other being LINEAR. The precedent studies that we have chosen were TIAN TAN and FUNERAL HOME.

Through this project, we were able to:

1. Identify and explain different spatial types in architecture, and how they inform spatial use and experience.

2. Identify and analyse case studies to inform the design project.

3. Create tectonic expressions of different spatial typologies which impact on the uses and experiential conditions of space.

4. Generate design through conscious consideration of section-plan relationship with considerations of human scale, natural light, materiality and textures

5. Produce drawings (both 2D and 3D), modelling and verbal presentation to communicate and visualize architectural design and ideas.

Project 1B: 'Journey for the 5 Senses' Memorial

Based on the learning outcomes from Project 1A, we were to design two memorials with the theme of 'Journey of the 5 Senses'. One of the memorial to be concentric and the other linear, both for different subjects. After further discussion, we decided to design a concentric memorial park for The Lahad Datu Incident and a linear memorial park for Lee Kuan Yew. Shown below are the presentation boards for precedent studies and also our memorial.

Project 2: Site Analysis and Concept Development

In this project, we were required to analyse the site for out next coming project in terms of

  • Site survey: provide dimensions of its width and depth and indicate any adjacent buildings at the levels of plans, elevations and sections to create an

accurate record of what currently exists.

  •  Orientation (sun path)

  •  Climate (rainfall & temperature)

  •  Site contours

  •  Adjacent street and vehicular traffic patterns

  •  Pedestrian circulation

  •  Neighbouring contexts

  •  Vegetation

  •  Views from the site

  •  Views to the site

  •  Views through the site

  •  Noise

  •  Human-Cultural

We were to produce a presentation slide regarding these topics upon the site, which is Lembah Bujang. After that, we were to pr oduce our personal interpretation of the site through sketches. A few photos were selected which reflects what i feel about the site. On the journey of producing my sketches, i also eventually developed my concept, which is RELIVING THE HISTORY.     Project 3: Genius Loci-Visitor Interpretive                           Center

In this project, we were required to design a visitor interpretive centre after getting to know the site from Project 2. We were to further develop the concept from Project 2 and produce a schemtic plan to consider the flow of experience first. After that, the form is then developed to suit the functionality of the building. Ten spaces were required in this buildings, which were reception, foyer, souvenir shop, cafe, gallery, office, storage space, mechanical and utilities room, toilet and lastly MISC, which is my audio visual room.
