Project 1: Skeletal Construction "A                                      Shelter For One"

This project requires us to design and build a shelter out of recycled materials. It should only be as big as 0.75mx0.75m therefore the space is very limited. The construction of the shelter is very important as the main purpose of this project is for students to understand and apply skeletal construction. Moreover, the joints used should also reflect actual joints. Appropriate joints should be used to join appropriate materials. Through this project we learn to:

  1. Apply construction system in design.

  2. Recognize the implication of construction systems in design.

  3. Analyse the issues of strength, stiffness and stability of structures including modes of structural systems, forces, stress and strain and laws of static.

Project 2: Understanding Forces in Solid                           Structure & Surface Structure

In this project, we were required to select a building which is either an solid structure or a surface structure to analyse on. The main objective of this project is for us to further understand the mechanisms of these two structures, its structural components, how it reacts under loading and to manipulate it to solve design problems. After discussion, my group decided to choose Allianz Arena which is located in Munich, Germany. This stadium is of surface structure with its whole exterior surface covered in ETFE cushions. Through this project, i learned to:

  1. Identify basic structural systems in construction.

  2. Compare solid and surface construction systems.

  3. Differentiate solid and surface construction systems in terms of loads and forces acting on structural elements. ï‚·

  4. Recognize and apply the implications of construction system in design. ï‚·

  5. Analyse the issues of strength, stiffness and stability of structures including modes of structural systems, forces, stress and strain and laws of static.

Through this project, i gained ample knowledge on the mechanisms of pneumatic structures and also tips on model making as making a detailed model like this requires a lot of skills and tips for work to be more efficient. Moreover, as my individual report was to analyse on the LED light systems, i also gain a lof of knowledge in that area. Click            to view the report.
