Project 1: Industrialized Building System

This project introduces students to the IBS (Industrilized Building System) as well as its materials' embodied energy. Students are required to design a three level apartment block using IBS components where students will be exposed to different types and methods of the IBS system and the calculation of embodied energy for different materials.

Learning outcome:

  • Identify and collect relevant research data.

  • Explain a set of architectural and structural documentation.

  • Relate basic structural elements and structural principles in construction

  • Analyse and document construction methods and materials

  • Critique issues pertaining to energy efficiency, embodied energy as well as econological impact.

Attached below is the video that we have produced which includes the procedures on building our model using IBS components and also the workings on the embodied energy calculations of different materials.

Through this project, I learnt the different types and components of the IBS system and the benefits of using it. Moreover, I also learnt the calculation of embodied energy of different building materials which will help in my choice of material in the future, making my design more efficient and environmentally friendly.

Project 2: Construction Solutions

This project is an integration project with the final studio project for semester 5. It requires students to analyse and establish the structural and envelope system of the student's design to ensure that the design has a logical and workable construction system. This project also encourages students to think about construction as an integral part of their design and not just an afterthought which will in turn increase the students' technical competency.

Learning outcomes:

  • Analyse and document construction methods and materials

  • Evaluate existing construction system and detailing of the selected project.

  • Critique issues pertaining to construction principles, materials, techniques, codesw of practice, process of assembly and detailing.

  • Generate alternative construction solutions by means of sketches and drawings.

Shown below is the report produced.

Through this project, I am able to integrate my design with various construction techniques which makes my design more workable and realistic.
