Project 1: Application of Building Services

This project relates back to students' studio design project in Semester 2 which is a domestic sized building. Students are to demonstrate their understandings regarding building services by proposing and designing the most appropriate systems for the building which include:

a) Electrical Supply System

b) Cold water and Hot water Supply System

c) Sewerage and Sanitary System

d) Drainage System

Students are required to produce appropriate drawings and diagrams which include specifications. symbols, legend, images, texts, etc. to describe the planning and installation of all building services. Specific clauses from Uniform Building By Law (UBBL) or other relevant Law Acts, which relates to the proposed system should also be included in the presentation boards.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Identify relevant information related to water supply, sewerage and sanitary system, electrical supply system and drainage system.

2. Describe the planning of building services within the total design and construction process.

3. Describe the installation of building services within the total design and construction process.

Final Presentation Board

Through this project, i learnt how to design the building services in a residential housing and how to communicate the design by using appropriate specifications, symbols, legends and diagrams. Moreover, i also learnt how these building services work together to contribute to a comfortable and hygenic environment for its users.

Project 2: Case Study and Documentation of                      Building Services Systems

In this project, students are required to form a group of 6 and conduct a research on the building services systems of a selected building with a minimum of 5 stories. The systems to be included in the analysis are:

a) Fire Protection System (Active and Passive Fire Protection System)

b) Mechanical Ventilation System

c) Air-Conditioning System

d) Mechanical Transportation System

The building selected by us is the Heriot Watt University Putrajaya Campus. It is a new green campus that sits in a stunning lakeside location. Not only does it have the first living grass roof in Malaysia, it also includes numerous passive design strategies in its construction: rain harvesting system, campus lighting, optimised air-conditioning system, etc.

Through this project, i learnt about the various building services systems within a commercial building that contributes to the comfort of the users within it. As i was delegated to analyse on the air-conditioning system, i gained knowledge on the various mechanical systems of air-conditioning and how these mechanical systems contribute to the thermal comfort of the building's users.
